over the mountain in
Autumn
climbing in the storm
Kibune to Kurama
they say bears
for the sake of breathlessness
mountain sits
a sky is thunder off hidden
a mountain of trinkets at the foot
either side
I’m told the fairies – yōsei – here
wear geta
the stream is ice soba
it’s better in toe shoes
for such a trail
leaves everywhere dry today, few turned
but the party of leaves is yet to begin
bears perhaps for a picnic?
there are birds inhabit the seldom silence
a long wrack now
a flash and groan
once leapt for a tangle of root
and time smooths us too
like a wrinkle Earth shakes out
bears, they say
there are pictures so we’ll know what they mean
we’re here
drip with, glisten
and on the rain side
lightly, lightly
showers for the sun
nature was always exciting
who called on these gods, you’ll ask
all such as these tracks have taken me up
and nothing without the trees
the solemn gong is a mountain too
and now you hear it high in the leaves
and a breeze for the second fall
then what if the storm itself were a shelter?
and just for such bears as ourselves
raindrops the size of coins fall
a mischievous spiriting, this care
such hearts must never grow old
