#878 - and here we are at the end of the day

31.v.22

878

3.151

and here we are at the end of the day

fragments assembled from thin air

like stones stood grazing till the dim

how do we haunt?

no one hears our

shouting into the void

you wouldn’t recognize the place

so many places

won’t see themselves as such

laconic, let’s say taciturn

so many conversations people don’t want to have

it’s hard to get words out of the man

one is lost for them, you could say

the river might have had ten names

another if you blink

the more of a voice you have

the less you have to care who listens

everything has a voice

are you with me here?

fades

doesn’t matter what you say

how many laws you proclaim

no one ever owned a word

or could ever keep one

they stand like stones in a circle

bound off unbidden

one lends the naked ear

words are like

neither cat nor dog

can’t keep a good one down

but wombat, burrow under

like wallaby, off with the fences

like a bird before you name it

well away with the song

let us not speak

lest error

lest we possessed

here at the end of the day

esperanta serio #303

ĉio estas libera

neniu posedas la tagon

kvankam iuj gajnas, iuj perdas

neniu posedas vorton

kvankam ni trapasas ilin

survoje al la pasinteco

tien ĉiuj iras

everything is free

no one owns the day

though some win, some lose

no one owns a word

though we pass through them

on our way to the past

that's where everyone goes

esperanta serio #303 - barilo ĉirkaŭ la korto

barilo ĉirkaŭ la korto

ni ĉiam kutimis ridi ĉe tiuj lokoj

kiuj renomis sin

volatilaj ĉi tiuj eksterlandanoj,

neniam povas decidi

Istanbulo ne Konstantinopolo

Leningrado, Mjanmao, Mumbajo

sed

tiam denove, la Hawkesbury ESTAS la Nepean

kaj vi demandas vin

kial estas Sydney Sydney?

Wellington Wellington?

a fence around the yard

we always used to laugh at those places

which renamed themselves

volatile these foreigners,

can never make up their minds

Istanbul not Constantinople

Leningrad, Myanmar, Mumbai

but

then again, the Hawkesbury IS the Nepean

and you ask yourself

why is Sydney Sydney?

Wellington Wellington?

is it good to keep up this kind of thing?

you don't have to tear down a statue

in order to re-tell the story

I mean to get it right

though there are statues that ought to be torn down

(the tyrant, the slaver, the butcher)

but isn't it better to round them up somewhere

let people decide for themselves

a river doesn't need these things

nor does the sea

the written word remains for a while

but it too goes under

today we are burning the dinosaurs and their jungle

I don't think we can put them back

you can overdo the recycling

imagine the map without flags, names, borders

fresh coat of paint for a palimpsest

always answering the call

#877 - lifting the lid (ekphrastic)

lifting the lid

ekphrastic for R.D. McCormick’s 1895 ‘A Tasty Dish’

in the Hinton Collection at NERAM

supercilious

who sees past the samovar?

faux ancestors, ancestresses

the mantlepiece figure very civil war

everything here is civil

leadlit armorial

shows some blows brought us

shone leather on the leopard skin

over the china rug

she does demeure – tea rise, pour

is that tiara in her hair

or some lost laurel?

a rosy light

the world’s woes in print

are more than the man

like the map of empire’s burden

here casually cast

there is nothing on their plates

you see the steam

butler considers leftovers for later

now he is lifting the lid

this picture can be hung on their wall

happily ever after

#876 - the windmills

29.v.22

the windmills

excuse me, while I kiss the sky

                     – Hendrix

in lovely afternoon light

winter coming on

it is beautiful to see the solution

with what grace of nature turned

by gravel track

hill high

tank, silo, boulder lit

all the broad valley

golden patching of these slopes

and here’s the future now

a gathering – these friends

see old lines of transmission under

held up by forest once

beautiful to see these

flowers they are

and turn

see the sun and the shadows they cast

a west of cloud and cobalt

your demons will say ‘satanic mills’

but they are just chimneys

they are just smoke

we’re kicking the habit

worth it but hard

winter coming on

in lovely afternoon light

how gently they turn the day

esperanta serio #302 - senrjo

kiel milde ili turnas la tagon

winter, an afternoon light
the windmills
how gently they turn the day

#875 - a curse we can't translate

 48 web 1934_8.jpg

28.v.22

a curse we can’t translate

ekphrastic for Phillips Fox’s 1895 ‘The Desert Market’

in the Hinton Collection at NERAM

how here?

and who can see?

hill high walled

place is a fortress

spies first

now oils

who do we see?

how will they feel

to be in the picture?

the faceless, disembodied

blur tribes daubed

town of turban white and veils

each a tent

a hopeless little desert wisp

chaos of olive green to centre

someone has come by camel

from crescent till full till crescent again

their wares mere shapes

barely that

a wonder they’ve survived

arabesque of sky – rare jewel

if only one could tug this down

what cruel despot watches?

such an empire is all edge

things you’d never guess

keep saying the war is over

but here we are agains

see from portal dark

scene framed in a fading gilt

esperanta serio #301 - demonoj de analogio

301

demonoj de analogio

la poemo kreskas

el fendeto en sento

kie ia devaga sporo

de intuicio starigis

do inter ni

ĉi tiu drivo en signifo

flanke de kio estis

signifis antaŭe

iuj tagoj pensas floron

svingu la flugilojn

aliajn, kiujn vi konas

ĝi estos elherbata

beleco povas esti terura

ĉu ĝi eĉ estos permesita

konsisti en vortoj?

tiam kiel alie povas esti?

la poemo demetas sian pantalonon

ŝpinas reton de stelo

ĉu ne volvaĵo kaj kruco?

vi simple ne komprenas ĝin, ĉu?

kreskas sur la osto

diras veron malplej atendite

ĉiufoje malsama

la buŝoj de aferoj faras ĉi tion

ne estas linioj inter

sed skribo estas substanco

tie estas gvidado

de aliaj vivoj kaj mondoj tie

oni daŭre vokas

ĉu ĝi venos?

neniu kuraĝas skribi

poemon pri ĝi

sed nur ĉi foje

oni eble ŝatus trejni ĝin

super latisaĵo

supren muron

premu la sopiran ĉielon

multaj uloj deziras rikolton

oni diras, ke la poemo finiĝis

estas ĝuste kiel ĝi devis esti

mi vidas John Barleycorn

faskitaj kaj tranĉitaj

malsupren por la grafo

ni trinku!

suno blankigas, pluvo putras

sed la poemo kreskas simple

el fendeto en sento

kie ia devaga intuicio

metas la vagan sporon

demons of analogy

the poem grows

from a crevice in feeling

where some stray spore

of hunch set down

so between us

this drift in meaning

aside of what was

meant before

some days think flower

wind up the wings

others you know

it will be weeded out

beauty can be terrible

will it even be allowed

to consist in words?

then how else can it be?

the poem takes down its pants

spins web of star

is it not whorl and cross?

you just don't get it, do you?

grows on the bone

tells truth least expected

a different one each time

the mouths of things make this

there are no lines between

but script is substance

there's leading

other lives and worlds there

one keeps calling

will it come?

no one dares write

a poem about it

but just this oncein a while

one might like

to train it over a trellis

up a wall, push at the yearning sky

many wish for a harvest

they say the poem finished

is exactly how it had to be

I see John Barleycorn

bundled and cut

down for the count

let's drink!

sun bleaches, rain rots

but the poem grows simply

from a crevice in feeling

where some hunch

set the stray spore down
