ekphrastic for George Grosz’ 1928 ‘Der Agitator’
tongues out, thick lips
thin moustaches
a drumroll, iron boots
for pinhead glory
deep pockets for applause
corks popped
trumpet for the fool
how this one wears the medals!
megaphone, rattle
swastika too, what teeth!
grey men, clowns’ noses
cartoonly, they need him
he will make the grey spectacle
bums and tongues out
old flags fly new
teeth almost bite
little jagged jobs
ra ra now all ready for
the carving of the bird
