every hatred is subtly different

 

if you see something that doesn’t look right

 

 

you may have experienced this before

in one form or another

you may have known victims

at least heard of them

 

it was all about their skin, their beliefs

the way they talk

sometimes it’s a book they read

or forgot to read

the company they keep

or something you just can’t remember

 

they’re not like me, they’re not like you

they’re not like US at all

 

something different you’d think

should make them interesting

 

but there seems to be a hatred

for just about any difference you could think of

especially for thinking differently

different habits, ways

… probably there are hatreds

for differences that wouldn’t occur to you

 

each hatred is subtly different

 

and let’s not get confused about this

you may have had some strong dislikes in your time

but this isn’t like how I feel about marmite

or pineapple on my pizza

it’s not like it’s too hot, humid today

 

I’m talking serious nasty

 

and however unreasonable

hate always has its reasons

 

people who hate typically have a legitimate grievance

in the sense that things are pretty shit for them

or for the ones they love

 

this could be quite geo-political

there’s the system … I’m thinking money here

climate’s a thing

like your house struck by lightning

on fire and floating away in the flood

or you’re just being ground down

by greedy bastards with good lawyers

whom you can never touch

 

but your hard core hater is short on

seeing the source of woes

not much on analysis

wants a shortcut

who’s to blame?

and it’s THEM

the ones with the funny hats, the pointy shoes

on the wrong end of the egg

 

 

it might be about someone has something

someone else thinks they ought to have

… a country for instance

this one is common

 

it’s often the case that people who steal

hate the people from whom they steal

it’s frequently difficult to tell where this got started

because it goes so far back

back before anyone could possibly remember

 

never underrate avarice, greed, covetousness

 

some people won’t even know that they’re doing it

and some will say it’s in THEIR  DNA

they did it to us

we have to

and so we go round again

 

hate becomes a compulsion

 

you may have seen this on the street

someone abusing somebody

somebody calling names

throwing fists or a knife comes out

 

you can see an aggressor

you can see a victim

sometimes hard to tell who’s who though

 

and it gets confusing

when the victims have victims

sometimes even the victims of the victims

can have victims

 

we can never rule this out

 

so it goes on

 

it happens often for instance

when you feel that your people have been murdered

by THEM, whoever they are

a family member would do the trick

father, mother, brother, sister, cousin, husband, wife

any of them killed in cold blood, locked up indefinitely

had their house bulldozed, even just lost a limb

been driven mad by torture

or something as simple as seeing a child blown to bits

the house just next door reduced to dust

with all your neighbours in it

 

these things have an impact

they can make almost anyone hate

 

you’d have to be a saint sometimes not to

 

it’s important to not make weapons available

to people with serious hate

 

and on the other hand

some will say but they need to defend themselves

 

there’s bay for blood

ask questions later

 

do you want to live in that kind of a place?

 

lately there have been some idiots quite lacking subtlety

say

‘we’ll just pass a law against this

that’ll do the trick’

 

‘we’ll wipe it out… we’ll exterminate hate’

 

exterminate doesn’t sound good

 

taking the guns away might be a better bet

don’t you think?

 

you may have seen it before

have had to deal with hate

have had hate spit in your face

trip you up, hurl slurs

 

and if not you then someone you love

maybe someone you love makes hate

 

if only we could draw a line under it

 

today is today

this is why you need to pay attention now

 

pay attention to the signs

 

like when you hear them snarling them a lot

 

when they say

bring me my pitchfork

feathers, tar, fire

lend me a noose or a knife

 

you have to be very sensitive

the worst haters may make the least noise

 

often they just won’t say

‘we’re about to throw the bomb now!’

‘we’re about to spray you with bullets!’

 

often they just won’t say

‘watch out!  we hate you! we’re coming for you NOW!’

 

but when you know the crisis is upon you

PLEASE!

make sure to provide your dear companion with a mask

before you put your own on
