how to create an empathy vacuum

 

demand all

 

be victim –

there’s your first commandment

 

‘I’m the victim, not you!’

 

say ‘no one else can understand

no one knows my pain’

 

and it’s true

but can you see out of this?

 

remember always what they did

and whether or not you’ll ever forgive

 

it’s just a thing we say

 

ignore facts

 

think of what they would do

 

dash hope

because it leads to love

which is an all between

 

paint the world into its mean corner

this was done to you

 

snarl back

and bite

 

could make a nation of it

take up the higher ground

 

lie in your cot

and mourn sleep with worry

 

roll self up in a tight little ball

 

refuse to take the pills

 

go grimace

 

fly flag over

 

death for an enemy

 

all of this can be done in pyjamas

 

imagine that this is the past

you’ll have to imagine the past while you’re at it

 

keep the claws sharp

scatter the eggshells

 

sign yourself useless

to all intents

 

they don’t matter

are they even people?

a people?

 

admit to nothing

stick destiny

 

always expect someone else to amend

 

never grow up

be free

 

never be sorry for what you will do

 

know that there are good days too
