they don’t leave much of the sky
ekphrastic for Nancy
Borlase’ 1949 ‘Old Brickworks, Ryde II’
at the Art Gallery of NSW
a chimney pause
poke out through creases
the paths, the pits, their shadows
all green but the colour of brick
blank primeval
solidity of distance –
once windows, doors
so many brick shades
plumb framing
old debris cleared aside
hills float and clouds too
nothing to trip
as we now know
the smoke occludes another blue
who would come on such a path?
there are no ruins here
