#1297 - they don’t leave much of the sky

they don’t leave much of the sky

ekphrastic for Nancy Borlase’ 1949 ‘Old Brickworks, Ryde II’

at the Art Gallery of NSW

a chimney pause

poke out through creases

the paths, the pits, their shadows

all green but the colour of brick

blank primeval

solidity of distance –

once windows, doors

so many brick shades

plumb framing

old debris cleared aside

hills float and clouds too

nothing to trip

as we now know

the smoke occludes another blue

who would come on such a path?

there are no ruins here
