castle before storm
ekphrastic for Erich Heckel’s1927 ‘Marienveste bei Würzberg’
nor leaf yet fallen
everyone you can’t see here is just about to go mad
sketchy
the clouds
hills behind
the vines
and hand by stone
slope laid up
by for such frolic monks
their half toil prayerful hours in cups
the walls
towers daubed
the pencil pines
grassed groves
a Bacchus dancing down
all this great silence built
seasons climb the trees
imagine!
I can’t see a flag anywhere
everything ever loved
is thrown to this risk certainty
of drawing on the storm
then comes the plough
as good as daylight
it will be mud again
