how many ways to go to the sky?

for a field guide to Australian clouds

 

call it bird’s eye

a view from up

and further still

 

how many ways to go?

 

beanstalk

ladder

high jump

stairs

 

and some of course already

 

there are as many now there

as we were from the ice

and followed the forests as they grew

swam until the reef

 

it’s island to island

raft of junk

by tooth and claw

 

on foot

and trudge so

cloud to cloud

the empty air between

 

they part and heal

each shines to forget

 

it isn’t a matter of prayer

 

a view from up

and always further

not much to see for the smoke

 

and very very occasionally

might ask each other

how it is that we got here (?)

 

will we be proud of the place we left?
