I have eaten many of my fellow creatures

and continue from time to time to do so

 

the unnamed, the unremembered

 

this is not something of which I am proud   

 

though, in a way, story of my life

a tale of excess too

 

these least of my hypocrisies

 

it is not behaviour I would encourage

on the part of others

 

have other creatures sought such a fate for me?

few, I imagine

 

am I brutal so to truth it?

it could happen with any kind

 

nor think myself better

more tasty, bright

 

at times I growl and show my teeth

 

I fought the law of averages

guess who won

 

much random atrocity

and terror where I tread

 

I take a long hard look

 

there’s sunshine falls into the burrow

what a pretty visage!

 

and I ask – how long is this war between us?

 

it was lovely the way that bird went

so fast, so far

when freed
