Alice on the table
Charles
Blackman ‘56
ekphrastic
dull eyes of the golden known
bright eyes of suspicion
thinking rabbit stew
girl’s thin
that wallpaper’s a sky
she’s come down
kind of leaning, petalfall
to other end the world
and bright suspicion
eyes have grown up on ahead
gets smaller at the shoe end
feet so far from the floor
dull-eyed
these are the antipathies
pride badging, the rabbit wears a splotch
will a teapot speak chimney?
who through window next?
where should we find a door?
bright eyes of suspicion
dull eyes of the already known
flowers so wild they just might fly
learned it all from a walrus, this one
who will hop first from the frame?
it’s your life and
the legend here –
trust no one
