edge-phobe’s
things can fall off
cups – full, empty
whether in them or not
take the ecliptic – that’s a trip
idle speculation leads to
things fall off for a fact
poetry is personal – full of
friends, relations, dust
and out of the blue
your phone, for instance
from crescendo, cadence comes
magnets overstretched
remember when washing fell from the line
or wish upon a star?
ledge edge, climber from the peak
wash windows, just the one mis-step
could drive the plot
now we come to the market
or climb to the top of the tree
view take in there, edge out to twig
from precipice, things fall
in principle you understand
and pave a way with good intentions
yet … too many things on my desk
the pile so tall, unread – don’t look
consider – ‘off your rocker’
likewise the proverb’s bucket kicked
things can fall off – wheels from the cart
and some have fallen off the waggon
while others rise and we know where this goes
ember up from fire
a wobble topple from the dark
spiders won’t as a rule, and cats all fours
have you noticed stars to wish?
camels’ backs and needles’ eyes
a tumble through the flag
was meant to catch us
caught us out
from the top of my head
and the tip of the tongue
out of these socks
and I among
mist from mountain
shall we hurtle, dark angels down?
rare plummet from the perch
or where the evidence is lacking
so a tree unleafs
and grapeshot windfall
sunglasses make the clouds
always more classic
at sea, in an aeroplane, top of a tower
pride before you-know-what
sun from the sky-sill
later moon too
not a question of intention
but the way they go
it’s not the fear of falling
it’s just the fear you’ll jump
