Berry Creek and the
Gore Cove Track
mossed under
in a gully and ferntricks
creek of the recent rains
lichen climb, moss bright
cast of leaf shadow
last of the long afternoons
slippery misted from
seeping and drip
you hear them bright hidden in calls
a frond catch
glade song above
flow gurgle below
and climb to a breeze
in t-shirt autumn
tidelap and fig
grasstree, mangrove shine
might as well all of us for the sun
a torrent of vines
train far up
to lizard hollow cling
what odds of a crossing?
so wear the hours with walking out
for the tide come
slow shadows
the mangroves
and brisk geology
steps down into day
some children’s laughter
tops the hill
all this from a risen spore
.
coda
made splendid the eye to take all this in
when you weigh up the odds of outliving yourself
bear first in mind the track
