how much do
we hate koalas in the state of New South Wales?
bugger off, Barilalo
more than the wallabies and the kangaroos!
more than wombats (their closest rels)!
more than the echidnas!
aside from blinky caramello
koalas are a pest and danger to themselves
with wings always somewhere else to fly
and tuck your tail under a rock
little liz
but koalas?
they’re not there
when I was looking
so everything’s alright
we want the trees for fire
for ash
to flatten the land with a crop
doesn’t matter which
but just the one
or a fast car squash
and one less stinky creature
none in person cute
koalas won’t get out of yr way
koalas aren’t even looking
but catching claws
feed them, you’ll get macrofauna
or SARS or something
koalas all carry COVID
everyone knows that
phylarctos
plummetus fearful
and strip the leaves of their tree
stand up to the brutes
we have to be hairychested
and shirtfront
bleeding heart liberals
hate them more
black armband types
won’t understand the bush
they come in for some tap in the drought
mostly the lazy sods are asleep
all gummed up with leaf
once upon a time
when work made free
pelts on a cart to sell and tasty
make a soup of bones
though some say wrong to eat
but so many recipes on-line
have a look
and bad to hold
(that’s so correct)
they fill our kids’ cupboards
love them in zoos and national parks
(although we hate them of course)
do we hate them enough
to turf ourselves out?
bring a government down?
up a tree
down a hole
these are the basics of plot
when was the last time you saw one?
maybe they’re all already gone
bring in the dozers
we’ve got ‘em
otherwise tell me
what is the point (?)
we could build them a whole new outskirts suburb
keep a couple of gums for a deco
what do they want?
how do they vote?
where do we think they should live?
why do we have to keep footing the bill
why can’t they just clear out
to the koala reservation?
too many roos in the top paddock?
but this mob?
they’re not so good at getting off
no hop, no emu tear
none of that wombat cannonball capability
you’ve see them do the singed crawl over the burning
tar?
those particular koalas were on fire
and that’s spectacular of them
I ask you
which part of extinction isn’t forever?
(trick question, yes)
it’s not hard though really
all you have to do is stop clearing
say – we’re enough
let a few trees back
let them be
say they were here before me
and this is koala land
