crowd
and shadow
ekphrastic
for Ethel Carrick’s 1913 ‘On Circular Quay’
who are they
where the tram today?
a pubspill
the streets veer and worm
everyone is on their way
eyes cast down from
the dark of high windows
the air abbreviates
horse of another century
all that is built
pastel, aloof
breathe in
these shapes are animal
barely manage to mud a sky
whose is the sunlight fallen?
and what are these poles?
so much insulation!
they’ve all been waiting for a war
time gives on to the hundred years
the place remains
in, out of frame
a stumble along in dung dust
now and in time to be
the unknown
are all swept away
