the ochre ridge
ekphrastic for Sidney Nolan’s 1948 ‘Pretty Polly Mine’
scale confounds
day cruel with light
this is what the country is –
by mullock pile, humpy down
all beak and all claws
dunny off, scrub stubble
money in the ground
a scratch at fancy flight
headframe – little desert Eiffel
chimney’s day off
a dusty suit, some find
there is a vagueness
makes all plausible
blue up
and pales to nothing
just the frailest of tin wires
otherworldly
as the boardroom
now coming in to land
the centreman casts no shadow
