hiapo
ekphrastic for John Pule’s 1998 ‘Mercy’
bones!
of the eye blear
past wash
a chequerboard shield of the sea
a lost cross
legs gone
some bird larger
edge frays to wall
fine lines!
a shield, this burial
the angel
and with teeth come
think once how our distance was safe
sex worship
the animal spanner
flight path
church plate
and arrows
an island heart
stairs falling, stars
a figure frames the camera catch
fish to swallow boat whole
an urgent creep of cloud
great eye
anguish among
a blinding if sun shows
none of this is signed
there is no face found here
make mine the mortal remains
