Fingal’s Cave
for concert pieces
why, thou
breeze of the valley, hast thou left mine ear?
I hear no
distant roar of streams!
No sound
of the harp from the rock!
– James
McPherson’s Ossian
sea is a
conch in the great roar of time
wings scud
colour and bravely
sail capers
of daring
from this shield
two
clarinets, bassoons
salt surge
a blind bard
sings
this blow
about
timpani
roll
haul of spray
fishwhiff
mast is a
tree to the night
and touch
stars
ebb swell
trumpets
gather sky to
the rocks
pipes drowned
hill high far
reel on the
deck till
sweet this
dark
where waters
still
on such a day
no landing
