on a day like today
ekphrastic for Conrad Martens’ 1853 ‘View of the
Heads, Port Jackson’
summer sun
shining in the storm
stiff wind to
tack the heads
clear of breakers
and hear the
skylight pounding with rain
dark sky with
gulls lit
a kind of Sydney
sublime
watercolour, of
course
gouache, gum,
scraping out
someone ashore,
on the rocks
dog perilous
and like me
here for the
spectacle
it’s hopeless
trying to stay
dry
