place possessing us
ekphrastic for Fred Williams’ 1963 ‘Young Yangs’
the striking thing is how nothing
connects
although it all shines together
this is a picture, not of one,
but of distances
not bones, it’s just paint
the wind has brushed things here,
there
so that in this far moment
as if it were a sky taken
so many meteors fell
they’re still burning
close up you frame what’s only
colour
for the present only
things must have grown
how else?
you’d have to hide from this sun
from all of the bodies of heaven
these primitive forms of
punctuation
ambiguous to read
