something shines at your feet

   brass

fall through the day

 

look down

that’s where the past is

 

this is to remember

something to polish

they would never have dreamt

a little brass square

where everyone treads

 

because once the sky fell here

nor just the once

through centuries

 

but never again

 

look where you’re going!

consider the care with which we came

 

heads tumbled here

 

trip over the blind

this is where we’d closed our eyes

 

that happens with horror

most natural thing

avert

 

remember before it’s too late

 

here are the ones who had nowhere to go

or duty tied them to a grief

 

gone is forever

hearts tumbled

they’re not here

 

who carried on business, belief

remembered the darker days

 

it’s only a moment back then

of your time

 

something must take you out of the day
