a year in the sauna with beer
which are a kind of woods
the fish we caught
you should have seen
but had to be fried on the spot
so…
in the sauna
you tell a thing and it’s true
take the whiff of the trail
it’s away we go!
few see the door
but please do come in
we’re already here
we were hopping the logs
river ran away
honey, and is it marmalade?
a delicate act of balance
the many beers to choose
woodpeckers for punctuation
look up
ask yourself why
hiss steam
a bear’s all spit and fight
and here’s where all is told
a sauna is like to be in a tree
and the characters you meet!
all Moomins
straight out of the Kalevala
wily fox and wayward wolf
all of this was conversation
with other bears of course
all of the best come sing in a sauna
it’s the song that makes a nation
(bright whisper brooks, gush streams)
I suppose that you know how it is with a bear?
there’s winter in every one
now and then we go out into Finland
(clouds of gold and bursting buds)
mostly it’s just our own woods in here
night that way and this
a hunger for day
summer trails to tell
how once we were all fish
raise a glass
or a can, if preferred
it’s a thousand lakes
as far as we count
it’s every year with beer in the sauna
and twilight
still all paws fall in with the track
