#879 - another take

another take

no one has ever owned a word

no one could ever keep one

a kennel, a stable, a dictionary

words unleash, they bolt, they burn

palaces have been erected

the committee, once formed, must succumb

this is to tell a story

this is to argue it out

to fashion the shopping list

have been at the beck

and words call too

there was a time approached truth

in such manner

but those old truths are gone

we will be

and last of us

a testament

consisting of you guessed it

it’s by such means

a lightbulb glow

warmth of words

is some magic and prank

your pants are falling down

of course a premeditation

the place we commit to the crime

some never thought before

as much as to say

lead weight of the past

plumbs the blood

yet a new word bobs up

in the river rolls on

(just a manner of speaking)

journey’s end for mere illusion

one has to imagine a sea of them

come up against the horizon

you think it

fair breeze fills one’s sails

words well ahead of us

and follow up the rear

leviathan, titanic too

words always were I suspect

who’s to say protozoa antics

are not our metaphor?

who will be chosen to speak?

say worm, ear to ear

abstruse

are in their own right

text to be image

shall I say ‘hilltop pinking’ –

you’re there

found at a pinch and itch

they have made long study of us

come with their own cobwebs

here Helicon

finely layered

take trowel and brush

all fossils to delve

any we in our way

a lost language

consisting of anyone’s conjecture

always a lot of pretending

use abuse as you will

we are far

from possessing

the grunt of assent

desperate whisper

say all sorts when possessed

waggle in the spirit so

words have and will

burst into song

I don’t think you’ll ever stop them
