respectable sunshine
ekphrastic for H.A. Hanke’s ‘The Rock Pool, Balmoral’ (1946)
from the Hinton Collection, at NERAM
a face too far
another turned down
rocks all shadow, dapple
legs crossed, watchful
heels I think
red ribbon in the hair
and the rest of the harbour
washed off, away
these two namelessly here
others far for distance
and maybe sneaking off
or fish
what ancient lessons
in the stone are missed?
a little brine, some foam
respectable sunshine
dances safe little waves
ebb, wash
a prim bay foliage
ocean edge
an end of the world
one might almost expect luggage
they are so
just washed up
shallow creatures dare the day
far under all we see
it’s the sky you’ll have to guess
