beyond where
(call it a passion)
only the absolutely
other can instruct
– Levinas
the dispossessed are saints
all lap up their suffering want
the damaged ones sit wise
we worship at their feet
martyrs whom the fire has cleansed
now ash to rub in an open wound
that’s just so we have the blessing
no wisdom but the suffering kind
a list of advantages, like pain
like tumble down the stairs
and die to tell the story –
call it invaluable schooling
those deprived of education
they know a thing or two
whom we persecute
shall we by their lips quench?
guzzle the moral
carry off in our beaks
the poor, the meek, the mild, the weak –
‘get on with it’ the sidelines call
those upstairs missing, so savant
could lead us into battle
soul under the rug
and robot slave
the abnormal, creatures off the chart
the abused, the ones rotting
simpletons, favoured of fate
those we have hit right out of the park
the dead, good for an object lesson
the damned are our great gods today
ghosts speechless
black swag of a billabong song
and the dreamers worst of all
shone with lack
there’s listening now
there’s seeing them
when’s there giving back?
