in a heartbeat
sleep to dream again
for Shari Kocher
unload from the
nose
of a novelty plane
(we had been
wondering how to get off
… all our duty free
… and now afoot in
the ellipsis
department store of
everyone’s mother
and lost the way
TO TRAINS
or
to the upper air
bracket open for
life
on childhood
kneehigh
to escaliwagulator
most of our luggage
is with us now
some carry-on still
gone
kept waking
as if to where?
the fire re-lit
heard rooms away
it’s fading
I am falling from
it
wear a mask in the
day
things remembered
are not either
none of this ever
oboe and cello –
tangle of chords
in here
scratch of the
surface
land of the dream
is deep
the book I’m in
right now
far and way
centuries of
the seas
hills over
like a moon goes
fixing firmament
scribble and drip
is it treachery to
tell?
up to the old
heartbeat tricks
which are as well
as may be
dream told can’t be
the one that was
this cannot be the
way
