wingless creatures
consider
does it not surprise you
we wingless creatures rule?
hearts soar we say
it’s why we have seraphim,
flying rugs
will you follow with me
here, on foot
survey contenders for the
crown?
is it not surprising
it wasn’t an airborne
creature flew?
there are those with the
God’s eye over
zoom in, swoop to see
all unbelief
all unaware
but find their breakfast
fine
once a dinosaur took off,
just the one
now all do
doesn’t the spirit rise to
almost any challenge?
how flightlessly the
rooster roosts
if uppity, gets clipped
so disparaged, who steer
the sky
– ‘birdbrain’ or ‘you
insect’
ask –
would birds take down the
forest?
no, though they make a meal
of it
are they ever up?
no, not
sine, cosine, tangent
a slipstick toss – the aviation
instinct
and all from egg
some pole to pole
some cricket pitch for
range
having given rise to voice
they make us so unvarious
though in our tribes and
nations too
they mischief the blue with
unintending
and whirr
some imitate, some hide
what hope now of justice?
consider
spider catching from a
little spin
or we carve – drumstick,
breast
each is a question thrown
at the world
no, from it
consider littlest of wings,
high nesting
how even an ant may fly
velocity escapes them
fine boned, and finer than
each a fresh invention
feather to the quill
scribe air with signs no
longer seen
so much faster than us
think though of the
housefly
the patience of little ones
tearing off wings
to make them more like us
and once killed time that
way
though rule is not the
right word
consider poise and purpose
do you ever wonder
who really has the best of
it?
no patch needed to take charge
just looking up to see
so dance
till make a little leap
thoughts collected
all indoors
on the pin
where we read
the label ‘angel’
safe from the world
to brush away
you find yourself at home
