#7 - these are the whimsical instruments

7th of January
7
return to sender
or
these are the whimsical instruments

the first ever message in a bottle
might have washed up for a sign
it said
‘name what you like
it’s all the one sea’

you couldn’t read the address but

it was the same with the first breath –
somebody’s last

one puff of smoke goes round –
a lie from beginning to end

the Planck era didn’t last long
it was hot

after the big bang
there must have been a first star out

strange symbols call for conversation
the bottle has a lonely view

a lovely swim

is full of time travelled –
whimsical instrument

small in the great scheme
but there isn’t any
it’s all perhaps out here

dietary information has been washed off

speak far away
o eager elf

by compass till the circle comes
it’s too warm still today

Santa sees everything’s delivered

still the unending is imagined

try thumb and compasses
size up

my dinner once grew
now I am
and that’s about it

for bigger than though
take a mountain
you won’t get very far

cross your eyes
roll, hope to see

is it your nose though?
can’t really tell
can you?

no thing is proven
that’s a verdict

never trusted mirrors

how can experts help?

cut three times
and measure once

by hunch
by eye
by jingo

joy of just here we are
now push a little further

do you understand what’s under the bonnet?
or call it something else?
opposable thumb
fiddle sticks

consider the warm blooded
and their inter-generational struggle
to get the temperature right

everywhere mourn ourselves
and truth of was
you can try this at home

insects take care
they’re all for instance

first ever ant
to get up the mound
(you can measure this too)
forgot to bring the flag
made do just with a crumb

wish I had wings, could fly
would fill up the whole page then
