bright it

for David and Richard and Ronald

Gore Cove Track Series

days you need to get into the sun

a hedge trim or more light requires

let the vine tangle round

a lizardly skitter

times you’ll need to vanish

and here’s the track set out

how to!

takes you

some days pressed and ironed

trickle

some take to the track from duty

it always begs a question

larger than the asking

there are certain times of light

or shadow catching cloud

three fast notes over

where the day persists

and best still to come

you must know that

with or without

catch edge enough

often underfoot

shed bark

or let leaves down some days

here where tragedy must strike

because though far away some star explodes

loose gas and rocks become a world

here it’s Planet Earth

where some days do your harbour blue

some days just look up

you’ll call for the rain some days

and it may chase you home

rot down some d

best you can do

how dark forever in no one’s light

there’s the time when you’re the soil

you know this is how it will be

how the turkey comes scratching up behind

and where there are hearts to gladden

all of it gladdens the heart
