notes towards a song
‘on no other world’
on no other world
such treetops
and the cave of mind
this cast of light
all of us breathing
and the words to follow
grime alley
or the magic spell
on no other world are wings
nor gather pollen
the wombat’s way down
up to old tricks
the touch of breeze through fur
a forecast
a revision
on no other world
are likenesses found
does prayer rise to cloud, stick there
no other world salutes its sun
no one else can rhyme
who counts the days, the years but here?
where else does a question arise?
beyond and lost
where, otherworldly, is the news received?
it could be yesterday
it could be tomorrow
there’s nowhere else they give directions
or measure the speed of a clock
who else would fall into error
mistake their day for something else?
no other world would, knowing, wreck itself
invent the gods to blame
each other being, as we say, mere thing
correct me, if you will
but there’s no other world where I could be wrong
where else is paint or clay to forge
all alloy effigy
pencil, ink
no landscape else
who’ll hear a forest rise or fall?
selflessness and the rest of the crew
passions occasional, indiscretions
change fallen down the back of the couch
there’s no other world like ours for pretending
where else will we find fools?
manifest the many wonders
in the far off beyond
the same dimensions
and what we’ll call laws
we have seen very far in every direction
but no grief attends
neither joy where no hearts
there is no dog’s breath
the passcodes are missing
nowhere else is memory committed
nor deeds most foul
if you were there, you’d know
but as it is …
does anyone sleep out there?
to dream up the others?
where else is war, is love, declared?
neither splash nor
on no other world have the trumpets been sounded
where else do they worry about other worlds
or even conceive of them as we must do?
is anyone elsewhere dizzy with bliss?
you may wish to ascertain such yourself
but it is my belief
there’s no other world where for singing
and we sing
on no other world but this
and where, tell me, would it matter else?
we all so far alone
will you fight for this, my friends?
