three ekphrastics
going to bed with a fish
from Lu Shuyong’s ‘Going to bed with the fish’ (2017)
and why not?
the slippers are under
flowers arranged
the bed itself almost a bunny
and snuggle in
hospital writing
with heaven and gates
with heart to world
all eyes on a cat’s whiskered suspicions
the fish in its mermaid slippers
slippery if not smug
resignedness
for Li Jin’s ‘The world is yours again’ (2020)
everyone is a fish these days
the colour comes off and one stares
home casual, slight features
a jug leans, cups either way
it’s like cardboard, the backing script
garnish, dinner not looking
fruit rots in a bowl
green
for Cézanne’s ‘The Banks of the Marne’ (1888)
the grass runs by
river still, set
pencil pines, paint clouding
everything built afloat
reflections in the illusion of wash
tiles and distance tricked
a village like the past locked up
tree’s pride of the season
none of these human figures
nor is this where we are
