#2145 - the first sky

2145

the first sky

for a field guide to Australian clouds

the first sky was orange

   toxic too

though this can hardly have mattered

when there was no one breathing

after the moon event

the Earth was a big molten ball for some time

you can imagine the orange glow

skies were cloudless then

it took a billion years for the first cloud to appear

but to whom, you ask?

forget the Kármán Line

there were no such limits then

oceans were pink and the land too

no Gondwana yet

there weren’t any bright banners to wave

there were no flags to salute

a few more billion years

before the sky was true blue

and you ask about the other worlds

Mars, with its dusty rusty red

Venus – a sulphuric yellow

Mercury – just black – they have no sky at all

how far do we have to go to find another sky like ours?

who’s looking and who wants to know?

turns out Uranus, Neptune, Pluto

each for is reason

all have skies of blue

nothing to breathe in these places of course

even Jupiter, daddy of ‘em all

has blue skies

just the gravity would kill you

no surface to stand on though

I guess you go down fast there

but no one would see you go
