the day God died
the world went on
markets tracked sideways
there but for the grace
fish and chips
on the day God died
or if no fish, as I remember
loaves now stale
like waiting for an egg to be born
as if for the first of Spring
the greatest story ever told
when isn’t death the decent thing?
glory shone round as it does
every day
but this was the day
a Mordor storm for some
that’s the movie
there was a thorn crown
it was a got up grief for the nothing
time was untold too
think one bloke better than the rest
immaculately made so
embarrassing the footwash though
the holier than thou nonstop
but in the end God died
and that was just the beginning
no waiting round for Nietszche
they nailed this a long time ago
still the measure the years from
there
it was everyone up to wonder
and here’s the spear in your side
so many blessings
and the wars to come
the auto da fé
shunnings, cruel crusades
the endless blame
you’d think give it a rest, this
bother
queue for Olympus
and what’s a King of Hell to do
or a snake as big as the world
and a tortoise
here’s wolf god
there’s the thunder
then lotus boy
up and leaves the family
for the single sesamum and the rice
grain
lies down for the hungry tigress
so many role models to choose!
(though generally it’s all assigned)
Sunday you’d think a pancake lie-in
but up and giving visions, go on
you could make a cult of it, this
carry on
tree at the world’s either end
that was the day God died
