a day such as
finding the shade today
ekphrastic
for Hilda Rix Nicholas’ (1920) ‘Through the gum trees, Toongabbie’
on Burramatagal and Darug lands
empty, facing away from the dust
blur shed and farmstead
eyes straight ahead
clouds of canvas
lined up
bare summer trunks, stumps
cattle rubs, close ragged cropping
not a sapling in sight
light queuing to be gone
no creature but reaching out of the frame
like waiting for a war to pass
hard haze
not a lick of smoke in this sky
you can’t see who is here
you won’t see who is gone
