nuages

a preambulation for some flying islands

for Angie Contini

have you noticed how

sometimes a cloud comes together

                         from nothing?

you fix on a patch of blue

                then it’s not

it’s like a story starts

afoot up there

doors everywhere

a mirror in

can you read them?

won’t sit still

a bath may overrun

clouds dense, fluffy

come by tree

grew up among them

cradle on veranda

scud

or single file

sometimes clouds race

compete to be

float like signs of mind

(ideas all caught up

went right out of my head)

still something is shaping

here’s tortoise, here’s Achilles

really they’re pictures of nothing at all

but are they safe or of this world?

sometimes though split hairs, flake

layered

                        so the sun

               and come to beams

have you ever noticed

how a cloud breaks up?

fix on it – dinosaur coasts

        arrows, fluff dragons

diagrams and gone until

the day comes still

then there’s

your patch of blue
