#2120 - give to the world

give to the world

poem for Diwali

light’s victory

this stretch of word

breath entailed

wondering what day

an echo

ship so bridge so sea

these wheels and a fire away

this wink and wonder

                best wing on

with sparkle

in flit of which

candlepower

the little car and another in it

top of the hill to explore

brightest lamps are furthest

are time beginning

with bounce through webs

on a mulberry day

today’s new sky

laid wove

breezeless

one city, another

we leave a trail of years behind

and this is for forever

I set it all down to be lost

the under over word

not yet still with

lines for the book of the gone

a getaway from it all

such as my ruins are

#2119 - truth of a tree

2119

6.291

19.x.25

truth of a tree

is only as great as its least leaf

as the ant along

good news!

and tell rain’s frenzy

tell out the wind

and the still

truth of a tree is only in standing

a leaf falls for presage

dry, to be soil

none of this requires belief

whose web in the bole?

whose scat is that?

a tree is all these accidents

and, one day, falls, as all

so soil from which another

so seed to stretch

play tendril, toil

such is a tree’s truth

#2118 - the fog

2118

6.290

18.x.25

the fog

yours truly

sometimes you’ll wake up not there

last idea left

yesterday’s a light year gone

that is, of course, a distance on foot

my cloud unknowing now

and why?

none remember

least of all

the order as in any bird

a picture takes your day apart

but you can still be here

woke in this cloud for a habit

knew words but not from where

why should a person be named?

in all the green far of was, tell me

how one pill is another, head further

then the heart apace

that’s the aliens

no insect than bigger

still this music lives

one morning woke up without

should sharpen something else how

polish my own mist

there are days one ought

and I expect you to join the dots

who else but

leafless in my own treetops

it’s any head my own

don’t you worry about me

I know what day it is

do you feel that a day is missing?

still this music lives

#2117 - on the far side of the mind

2117

6.289

17.x.25

on the far side of the mind

pixies and poltergeists, greybeard fears

lost shopping lists and chimney lusts

old light traps, charms

a pigeon sits in cooee

everything’s everywhere now

no one can see me

this is just for as long as it takes

here’s my receipt

there are cashback rewards

is it selfish this wishing?

in your time and mine

no one can see me

we race the heart for home

How to Write a Long Poem 12 - Dream Diary (and entertaining the whackiest thoughts)

12

Learn to trust the first thing that comes into your head

(or at least entertain it!)

Not uncritically, but for a starting point.

Keep a dream diary. Get into the habit of writing dreams down the moment you wake. Or alternatively using the voice recorder on your phone.

This habit can lead to the direct (and also the indirect) creation of poems.

On waking, you have typically about fifteen seconds in which to recall as much of the dream as you can before it may well be gone for good. Of course what you retrieve will generally only be partial... that gives you an opportunity to imaginatively fill in the gaps.

Dreams do a lot of jumping about … the dots to join are a fair way apart. Read Lewis Carroll and you get the idea.

That could be a very good thing for poetry making, because the best poetry often involves mind (and heart) leaps of some sort.

Equally it’s your waking work, as a poet, to do enough of the connecting to make the dream-derived plot and imagery an accessible and worthwhile place for your reader. In other words it's a bit optimistic to think that the dream will give you the whole poem for go to woe. Though it can happen.

The more you think and talk about dreams and the more you record, the more you will dream and the more you will remember. It's potentially a virtuous cycle!

The dream recollection habit is productive in another way too. It gets you used to the idea that you start the day with an idea for a poem. It gets you used to the idea that there are words and images and observations (new ways of seeing the world / new worlds to see!) worth beginning with the moment you wake up. And if your first ideas are worth entertaining then your next ideas can be too. Taking dreamleavings seriously is a way of taking your thoughts and feeling more seriously generally. The daydream is one of the royal roads to poetry too!

Whether it's for recording dreams or daydreams, or any ideas at all, have a notebook (or other recording device) with you at all times. Take seriously your first thoughts, your second thoughts and all of the subsequent thoughts as well.

#2116 - the day is stone

the day is stone

for the Gore Cove Track Series

October

here’s dapple at

bright Banksia twist

skitter and glimmer

in a timber fit

just about now our sun begins drilling

tilt hat for a defence

it’s tangle in the shallows then

it’s much of a midst we are in

one can imagine living under a rock

everyone here is seeking shadows

I hear the track

it comes to me

and it’s away too

it’s fading into itself

soon we’ll tread this to dust

I gather up these lines and go

where the shade’s most deep
