there is a worldwide conspiracy

and suppose there is?

suppose there really is a conspiracy…

 

there is a worldwide conspiracy to profit from the labour of others

… they do the work, someone else gains

a lot of people want a piece of this

but somebody still has to do the work

 

why stop at one conspiracy?

that was just the top of the list

 

there is a conspiracy of humans to steal from, kill, eat or enslave every other creature on this planet

(except for the ones they haven’t noticed yet

but their days may be numbered too)

 

none dare call it conspiracy

but

animals are being eaten at a phenomenal rate

80 billion a year at least, bred and raised to this end

(and that’s not counting the fish)

who knew?

 

there is a worldwide conspiracy against shade

a conspiracy to take the forests down

(the conspirators have been at it for a while and the job’s already half done)

 

a conspiracy to burn everything that can be burned

make the atmosphere unbreathable

there’s eight million humans dying every year from this

who knew?

 

turn smoke into money into smoke

they keep cutting, keep digging for it (like it wouldn’t matter)

‘like there’s no tomorrow’

and that’s a conspiracy too

 

have you noticed that

there is a conspiracy of people with penises to lord it over the rest

to have all kinds of power, to manspread, manexplain, to man the desk, make most of the money and pass it on to their sons

 

and even there!

there is a conspiracy against the young,

pat them on the head, tell them what’s best for them

and at the very same time

to ruin the world they will have to live in

 

there is a worldwide conspiracy of weapons

enough to kill us all a few times over

and every other creature too

(except for the cockroaches, they say…

we all know cockroaches are conspiring)

 

there is a conspiracy of dunces against science

say they know better

(‘of course the sun goes round us, anyone can see that

of course the world is flat’)

 

then there’s the science of making better weapons

why?  because they do

of course that’s a conspiracy too

 

and have I mentioned Santa Claus?

there is a conspiracy to make us believe in fairytales

to impose bizarre fantasies on people

make them believe in things that just aren’t

that’s because their ignorant ancestors didn’t know any better

and we’d better look up to them

they did such a great job not

 

for instance believing that they are forever, or we all are

and ghosts and burn in hell, sing with fairies upstairs

or that they’ve a right to whatever they like

because top fairy said alright  

some take murder as their duty

conspire in these boys’ clubs called armies

so they can do it at scle

 

so you see there are conspiracies of greed, of fear, of anger, of hate

of superstition, all sorts of conspiracies

 

they are truly worldwide

and some people want to take them off-world

spread them all through space

 

people think those conspirators are really really smart

 

around the world you’ll see statues of the old conspirators too

people who enslaved other people or stole their countries

 

perhaps conspiracy was always with us

will always be wherever we go?

 

the grandest conspiracy is against hope

the hope that we’ll wake up and see

where we are and what we’ve done

and whom we’ve put in charge

 

did you know

there is even a conspiracy to invent conspiracies

to distract us from the real conspiracies there are

 

but there’s really no need to look for new conspiracies

to delve under the ground, over the clouds

 

dumb animals don’t conspire against us

or anything or anyone

 

but they flee from us whenever they can

they try to get away

because

this thing’s as plain as day
